Zamboanga City officials have confirmed that all school buildings remain safe for occupancy following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck parts of Mindanao on Monday, June 8, 2026. The tremor was felt at intensity four in Zamboanga City, prompting immediate inspections of government and school facilities.
Structural Assessments Conducted
Mayor Khymer Olaso made the assurance on Thursday, June 11, based on the results of monitoring and structural assessments carried out by the City Engineer’s Office in coordination with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO). The assessment was ordered to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and school personnel as classes resumed.
Mayor Calls for Vigilance
Despite the generally positive findings, Mayor Olaso advised school officials to remain vigilant. He urged them to immediately report any signs of structural damage, particularly large cracks that may have developed after the earthquake. The city government continues to monitor school facilities and other government-owned structures for any delayed effects.
The earthquake occurred as approximately 248,000 students returned to schools on Monday for the first day of classes of school year 2026-2027. In response, Olaso had initially suspended classes to ensure the safety of students and teachers. The latest assessments have now allowed classes to resume with confidence.
