Clergy: Marcoleta must face court in plunder case

The Clergy for Good Governance (CGG) has asserted that Senator Rodante Marcoleta and other high-ranking officials should face their legal accusations in court. The group's statement comes after Marcoleta was formally charged with plunder before the Sandiganbayan.

Court is the proper venue for accountability

According to CGG, if the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) rally supporting Marcoleta was truly about accountability, then the senator should present his defense in court rather than in other forums. The group emphasized that Marcoleta must face the charges directly and allow his members to see him submit to the judicial process.

Father Robert Reyes, a Catholic priest and CGG convenor, stated that if Marcoleta is truly innocent, he should not fear appearing in court or facing the lawyers of the Ombudsman. “If he is innocent, he should welcome the chance to prove it in court,” Reyes said.

Other officials implicated in flood control scandal

Reyes also urged that cases be filed against other lawmakers and officials identified in the flood control scandal. He specifically mentioned Senators Joel Villanueva and Chiz Escudero, and even President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., if evidence shows their involvement.

“No one should be exempt from accountability because of their current position,” Reyes stressed. The group insists that the legal process must proceed without fear or favor, ensuring that all those responsible for the alleged plunder face justice.
