Sandiganbayan Schedules March 3 Trial for Zaldy Co and 15 Others in P289-M Flood Control Case
The Sandiganbayan Sixth Division has officially set the commencement of the trial for March 3, targeting former Ako Bicol party-list Representative Zaldy Co and 15 additional individuals. This legal proceeding centers on allegations concerning a substandard flood control project valued at P289 million in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro. The court's order, dated February 10 and released on February 16, marks a significant step in this high-profile corruption case.
Bail Hearing Concludes and Trial Dates Established
In a recent development, the court has concluded the bail hearing for nine former officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). This decision came after the prosecution declared that it would not present any further testimonial evidence. Both the prosecution and defense have been granted two days each to submit their respective documents and comments before the bail petition is resolved. The presentation of prosecution evidence is scheduled to begin on March 3 and continue on March 5, with subsequent sessions set for every Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30 AM.
Key Testimony from Commission on Audit Official
During the bail hearing, Victoriano Acosta, an official from the Commission on Audit (COA) Region IV-B, provided crucial testimony. He revealed that the commission issued a notice of disallowance for P84 million from the total P289-million project fund. This action was taken due to alleged non-compliance with the project's plans and specifications. However, the defense argued that this disallowance could still be appealed and does not represent a final decision, a point acknowledged by the auditor.
The case highlights ongoing efforts to address corruption and ensure accountability in public infrastructure projects, with the trial poised to shed light on the details of this controversial flood control initiative.
