DILG Chief Demands $1 Billion Return from Zaldy Co Before Any Negotiations
Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla has issued a firm condition for any potential dialogue with former Ako Bicol Party-list Representative Zaldy Co. According to Remulla, Co must first return one billion dollars before the government will consider engaging in talks with him.
Response to Surrender Feelers and Fugitive Status
This statement comes in response to recent reports of "surrender feelers" from Co, indicating his intention to surrender and communicate with authorities. However, Remulla emphasized that while the possibility of negotiation depends on the Ombudsman, his personal stance is clear. He believes Co should refund the massive sum of money he allegedly took, as no lives were lost in the case, only financial resources.
Remulla highlighted that this restitution is a prerequisite for Co to be given an opportunity for a plea bargain. The DILG chief's remarks underscore the government's focus on recovering the funds linked to the controversy.
Palace Support and Ongoing Efforts
Previously, Malacañang expressed support for a possible dialogue between Co and the Ombudsman if it could help uncover the truth regarding anomalies in flood control projects. Despite this, Co is currently considered a fugitive, believed to be in Portugal with a Portuguese passport and a golden visa.
Remulla noted that although there is no extradition treaty with Portugal, the government is exhausting all legal and diplomatic avenues to bring Co back to the Philippines. This effort is part of a broader push to address accountability and transparency in public funds.
Key Points:- Zaldy Co must return $1 billion before any government talks.
- Surrender feelers have been reported, but Remulla sets strict preconditions.
- Co is a fugitive in Portugal, complicating extradition efforts.
- The Palace supports dialogue if it reveals truth in flood control project anomalies.
