Barangay Councilor Killed in Gun Attack Outside Cockpit in Clarin, Bohol

A barangay councilor was shot and killed outside a cockpit in Barangay Bacani, Clarin, Bohol at around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, 2026. The victim was identified as Marino “Aden” Montojo, 37, a councilor of Barangay Caluwasan, Clarin.

According to the investigation by the Clarin Municipal Police Station, the victim had just come from the cockpit and was about to go home on his motorcycle when an unidentified suspect approached him from behind and suddenly shot him in the head, causing him to fall along with his motorcycle.

After the shooting, the suspect quickly boarded a waiting motorcycle and fled towards an unknown direction. The victim was rushed to a hospital in the town but was declared dead on arrival by doctors.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Jason Birondo, information officer of the Bohol Police Provincial Office, said that personnel from the Scene of the Crime Operation (Soco) recovered two empty shells from a .45 caliber pistol at the crime scene. Birondo revealed that the Clarin Municipal Police Station is continuing its investigation and is backtracking CCTV footage to identify the suspect.

He added that they already have an initial lead on who the killer might be but are withholding the name until the suspect is apprehended. “At the moment, the investigation by the Clarin Police Station is ongoing. They are reviewing CCTV footage and initially have a lead on the killing of the councilor,” Birondo said.

Investigators have also interviewed the victim’s relatives and family to determine if he had received any death threats.
