Ex-E-Bike Driver Blames Demon for Burglary Attempt

A former e-bike driver in Barangay Inayawan, Cebu City, has been arrested for attempted robbery after allegedly breaking a hole in his neighbor's wall, claiming a demon urged him to commit the crime. The suspect, identified as Jerson Tapdasan, also known as Aladdin, 37, is believed to be a user of illegal drugs. He is currently detained at the Inayawan Police Station facing charges of attempted robbery.

Incident Details

The incident occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, in Sityo Cactus, Barangay Inayawan. The victim, Mary Melodie Celis, 34, had just returned home from work at 7:30 p.m. when she heard a loud noise coming from the back of her house. Upon checking, she saw Tapdasan creating a hole in the wall. Celis screamed for help from her neighbors, and Tapdasan attempted to strike her with the hammer he was using. He fled when neighbors responded but was quickly apprehended by responding police officers.

Suspect's Account

In an interview with Superbalita Cebu, Tapdasan claimed that a demon constantly whispered to him, urging him to do evil deeds. He said the demon's voice was loud and caused him headaches, leading to anger and erratic behavior. Tapdasan also suspected that the demon might be an "agta" (a mythical creature) living in a large duhat tree in their yard. On Wednesday evening, after using drugs, he claimed the demon whispered to him again, prompting the attempted burglary.

Tapdasan expressed frustration with a female voice he attributed to the demon, which told him to eat. He complained, "I am very angry with that woman who whispers 'eat now.' How can I eat when there is no food or viand?"

Apology and Plea

Tapdasan apologized to his neighbor for damaging the wall and requested that she not press charges, promising to repair the damage. The victim has yet to decide whether to pursue legal action.
