FILIPINA tennis star Alexandra Eala will make her Italian Open debut on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 (Philippine time), facing Poland's Magdalena Frech at the Foro Italico complex in Rome. The match marks the first career meeting between world No. 42 Eala and world No. 45 Frech.
Building Momentum
Both players are eager to gain momentum after falling in the second round of the Madrid Open. Eala, who turns 21 on May 23, is aiming to reverse her recent clay-court struggles, having failed to advance past the second round in Linz, Stuttgart, and Madrid.
Potential Round of 64 Clash
If Eala triumphs, she will face world No. 31 Xinyu Wang in the Round of 64. Wang defeated Eala in their only prior encounter at the ASB Classic last January, winning 5-7, 7-5, 6-4.
Preparation for French Open
Eala arrived in Rome on Sunday and immediately began preparations for the prestigious clay-court tournament, officially known as the Internazionali BNL d'Italia. The event serves as a crucial tune-up for the French Open, which starts on May 18 in Paris.
Last Year's Performance
In the 2025 Italian Open, Eala suffered a first-round loss to Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk (0-6, 1-6) but reached the doubles quarterfinals with American Coco Gauff.
Star-Studded Field
This year's tournament features top players including Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek, and Gauff, who currently hold the world's top four rankings.
Madrid Exit and Ranking Rise
Eala is looking to bounce back from a tough Madrid Open, where she exited in the second round after losing to 19th seed Elise Mertens of Belgium. Despite the setback, the 20-year-old improved her ranking by two spots to a career-high No. 42.
