Gilas Pilipinas Training Schedule Adjusted for FIBA World Cup Qualifiers

Coach Tim Cone has announced a strategic adjustment to the training schedule for Gilas Pilipinas as they gear up for the crucial second window of the FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers. While the initial plan was to commence preparations on February 11, 2026, Cone has moved the start date to February 16 to accommodate player availability.

Reasons Behind the Schedule Change

Coach Cone explained that the decision was necessary because only four players were initially available for the earlier date. By shifting to February 16, the team ensures that key players from Japan and Korea can gradually join the camp. This move aligns with Cone's structured timeline, allowing for a more cohesive and effective training period ahead of the high-stakes matches.

Upcoming Challenges in the Second Window

The second window of the qualifiers is set to begin on February 26 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. Gilas Pilipinas will face formidable opponents, including the powerhouse teams New Zealand Tall Blacks and Australia Boomers. These matches are critical for the team's progression in the tournament, making the adjusted training schedule all the more vital for preparation.

Key Players Returning to the Roster

Several notable players are expected to bolster the Gilas lineup. Kai Sotto, who recently returned to play after recovering from an ACL injury, will be a significant addition. Despite missing the first window due to his rehabilitation, Sotto's presence is anticipated to strengthen the team's performance.

Other players joining from the Japan B.League include:

  • AJ Edu
  • Dwight Ramos
  • Quentin Millora-Brown

From the Korean Basketball League, the team will welcome:

  • Kevin Quiambao
  • Carl Tamayo

Additionally, elite players from the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), led by San Miguel Beermen star June Mar Fajardo, are set to rejoin the national squad. This diverse mix of talent aims to build on Gilas Pilipinas' current 2-0 record from the first window, positioning them strongly for the upcoming qualifiers.
