WBC Champion Melvin Jerusalem Embarks on Risky Title Defense in South Africa
World Boxing Council (WBC) minimumweight champion Melvin Jerusalem is preparing for a high-stakes challenge as he heads to South Africa for a rematch against familiar foe Siyakholwa Kuse. The bout is scheduled for May 16, 2026, at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg, marking a significant test for the Filipino fighter on foreign soil.
A Calculated Risk in the Ring
Jerusalem, 32, accepted this fight after missing out on a more lucrative matchup with Oscar Collazo, who holds two other world titles in the same weight class. Initially, Collazo agreed to a rematch but later opted for a different opponent, forcing Jerusalem to seek an alternative. Kuse's team extended the offer, and Jerusalem felt compelled to accept to avoid relinquishing his title.
"We're improving what we did in the first fight," Jerusalem stated in an interview with SunStar Cebu. "I'll do my best, put on a good show, and try to dominate to make sure I win." He emphasized his commitment to controlling the bout and impressing the judges, despite the anticipated hometown crowd support for Kuse.
Overcoming Historical Hurdles
Fighting in South Africa presents a formidable obstacle for Filipino boxers, as history shows. In 2023, Regie Suganob lost to Sivenathi Nontshinga in a world title fight, and in 2011, Johnriel Casimero was stopped by Moruti Mthalane in another championship bout held there. Aware of these precedents, Jerusalem is strategizing for a knockout to secure victory decisively.
"I'll try my best to knock him out because that's the surest way to win there," he explained. "But our goal is to control the fight and impress the judges." This dual approach highlights his awareness of the challenges posed by competing abroad, where judges' scorecards can be influenced by local favoritism.
Rematch Details and Fighter Records
Jerusalem and Kuse first clashed on October 29, 2025, in Quezon City, with Jerusalem winning by unanimous decision. All three judges scored in his favor, solidifying his status as champion. Jerusalem boasts a professional record of 25 wins and 3 losses, including 12 knockouts, while Kuse, ranked No. 2 by the WBC, has 9 wins, 3 losses, and 1 draw, with four knockouts.
As the rematch approaches, Jerusalem aims to reaffirm his superiority, this time in his opponent's backyard. The event promises to be a thrilling encounter, testing both fighters' skills and resilience under pressure.
