The long-awaited rematch between Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao and undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather will no longer take place. Pacquiao's camp confirmed the cancellation, stating that the fight's timeline remains uncertain. This announcement follows the cancellation of Mayweather's scheduled exhibition match in Greece.
Reasons for Cancellation
According to Pacquiao's team, the rematch fell through due to several federal lawsuits, scheduling conflicts, and financial issues. Last week, events company CSI filed a lawsuit against Mayweather, seeking to recover $4.65 million paid to the boxers for exclusive promotional rights to the Pacquiao rematch and an exhibition bout against former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.
Historical Context
Pacquiao and Mayweather first faced off in 2015 in what was dubbed the “Fight of the Century.” That bout generated over 4.6 million pay-per-view buys, making it one of the highest-grossing fights in boxing history. Mayweather won by unanimous decision.
