Davao City Durians Clinch Overall Championship at 2026 Davraa Meet

Davao City has once again proven its dominance in regional sports by successfully defending its overall championship at the 2026 Davraa Meet. The thrilling conclusion took place on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex in Tagum City, where athletes and officials from the Davao City Durians celebrated their hard-fought victory.

Medal Standings and Regional Rivals

The Davao City Durians topped the medal standings with an impressive haul of 172 gold medals, 127 silver medals, and 98 bronze medals. This performance solidifies their continued supremacy in the annual regional competition. Following closely, Davao del Norte secured second place with 67 golds, 55 silvers, and 81 bronzes. Davao de Oro claimed third place with 43 golds, 65 silvers, and 78 bronzes, while Tagum City and Panabo City rounded out the top five positions in the rankings.

Behind the Success: Preparation and Surprises

In an exclusive interview with SunStar Davao, Rey Solitario, Division Superintendent of DepEd Davao City, emphasized the meticulous preparation that fueled the Durians' triumph. "Our athletes performed exactly as projected. The intensive training and rigorous preparations we conducted prior to the meet are clearly evident in our wins," he stated. Solitario highlighted chess and gymnastics as standout surprises, noting that these events exceeded expectations and contributed significantly to the medal count. "Most of our traditional powerhouse sports delivered the usual gold haul, but the strong performances in chess and gymnastics show the breadth of talent in our division," he added.

Other sports that bolstered Davao City's medal tally included swimming, arnis, pencak silat, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, dancesports, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, and wushu. This diverse range of successes underscores the comprehensive athletic program in place.

Holistic Support for Student-Athletes

Beyond the accolades and scoreboard, Davao City places a strong emphasis on the holistic well-being of its student-athletes. The division's Learner Rights Protection framework ensures a safe and supportive sporting environment, with highly trained officials and technical working groups enforcing zero-tolerance protocols against any form of abuse. Additionally, athletes who do not place in their events receive immediate Psychological First Aid, helping them process disappointment while reinforcing resilience and self-worth.

"The focus is not only on creating champions but on developing resilient young citizens," Solitario explained. "Even in defeat, our athletes feel supported and valued." This approach fosters a positive and inclusive atmosphere that extends beyond mere competition.

Looking Ahead to Palarong Pambansa

During the closing ceremony, DepEd regional director Allan G. Farnazo praised the athletes' dedication and standout performances. He expressed optimism for even stronger results for Region 11 in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa. "The only direction for us is forward and upward," Farnazo declared, signaling a commitment to continued excellence on the national stage.

Solitario and his team extended gratitude to the city government and the entire SDO Davao City community for their unwavering support. "We remain focused and fueled by the encouragement of everyone involved. We will finish strong," he affirmed. The collective effort and community backing have been pivotal in sustaining Davao City's athletic prowess, setting a high standard for future competitions.
