Naga City Prepares for 2026 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet

The City of Naga is set to host the 2026 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet from March 22 to 28, welcoming student-athletes from across the region. This year's event marks a significant change, as only 12 school divisions will participate, down from the usual 20, due to eight divisions moving to the newly established Negros Island Region. Despite the reduced number of teams, organizers emphasize that the competitions will be tighter and more exciting, with preparations in full swing.

Third Time Hosting with Enhanced Preparations

Naga is hosting the CVIRAA for the third time, having previously staged the games in 2016 and 2017. The theme for this week-long event is "United in Sports", with the opening ceremony scheduled for Sunday, March 22, at 3 p.m. at the Teodoro "Doring" Mendiola Sr. Sports Field and Track. Officials from the Department of Education in Central Visayas (DepEd 7) selected Naga for its accessibility, excellent sports facilities, and proven experience in hosting major academic and athletic events, including the 2024 National Festival of Talents.

Preparations involve upgraded venues, organized billeting arrangements, comprehensive transportation plans, and robust security measures for visiting teams. The Naga City government is collaborating closely with the DepEd Naga City Division to ensure the meet runs smoothly and efficiently.

Educational and Inspirational Aspects of the Event

According to Naga Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Ronald Gutay, the CVIRAA is not just about competitions; it also fosters discipline, teamwork, and personal growth among student-athletes through sports. Many teams have already arrived in Naga, with authorities working diligently to maintain safety and organization throughout the event.

Notable figures expected to attend the opening ceremony include Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro and Bohol Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado, who will deliver inspiring messages. Naga Mayor Valdemar Chiong and Dr. Gutay will welcome the athletes, while DepEd 7 Regional Director Salustiano Jimenez will serve as the keynote speaker and officially open the CVIRAA 2026.

Competition Venues and Schedule

Competitions will commence on Monday, March 23, at various venues across the region. Most events will be held in Naga, but athletics, swimming, and badminton will take place at the Cebu City Sports Center. Additional venues include the Carcar City Sports Complex for baseball and the Minglanilla Sports Oval for elementary football, ensuring a diverse and well-organized sporting experience for all participants.
