NIRAA Meet 2026 Launches in Bacolod with Heat Safety as Top Priority
Bacolod City officials, led by Mayor Greg Gasataya, warmly welcomed 12 delegations from the Negros Island Region for the Negros Island Regional Athletic Association Meet (NIRAA Meet) on March 1, 2026. The grand opening ceremony took place at Panaad Park and Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan, drawing a massive crowd of over 10,000 delegates, athletes, coaches, and officials.
Extreme Heat Prompts Strict Safety Measures
As the event commenced, the Department of Education-Negros Island Region (DepEd-NIR) issued an urgent directive for all participants to implement rigorous heat safety precautions. This action was prompted by forecasts from the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) La Granja Station, which predicted a heat index of 40 degrees Celsius in Negros Occidental on March 2, 2026.
DepEd-NIR spokesman Alymr Ceazar Dequiña emphasized the severe risks associated with such extreme conditions. He warned that prolonged exposure and intense physical activity at this level could lead to heat cramps, exhaustion, or even life-threatening heat stroke. "Athlete safety remains our highest priority," Dequiña stated firmly.
Comprehensive Safety Protocols Enforced
To mitigate these dangers, DepEd-NIR has mandated a series of protective measures:
- Athletes must hydrate consistently and take scheduled breaks throughout competitions.
- Direct sunlight exposure should be avoided between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., the peak heat hours.
- Any symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or rapid heartbeat must be reported immediately to medical teams on-site.
Dequiña underscored that "performance must never come at the expense of health." Coaches and delegation officials are tasked with strictly enforcing hydration protocols, closely monitoring athletes for signs of illness, and ensuring adequate rest in shaded areas. Additionally, technical officials and organizers are required to provide easily accessible water stations and consider adjusting competition pacing if necessary.
In cases of suspected heat stroke—characterized by high body temperature, confusion, or fainting—DepEd-NIR urges delegations to seek medical assistance without delay. "Let us compete with excellence — but with discipline and responsibility. Stay hydrated, vigilant, and safe," Dequiña concluded.
