ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Over 4,500 young aspiring athletes successfully completed the 29th Summer Learn to Play a Sports Program, a month-long free sports training initiative organized by the Zamboanga City government. The program officially concluded on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, with a closing ceremony held at the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex.
Annual Youth Development Initiative
The Summer Learn to Play a Sports Program is an annual undertaking of the city government aimed at developing athletic skills, discipline, and sportsmanship among children aged seven to 15. This year's edition saw participation in 26 different sports disciplines, providing participants with intensive training to hone their abilities.
Dr. Cecil Atilano, Zamboanga City Sports director, noted that the program gathered a record number of participants and offered them comprehensive coaching over the course of the month. The training sessions were designed to cultivate not only physical skills but also values such as teamwork and perseverance.
Closing Ceremony Highlights
The closing ceremony featured a field demonstration where athletes showcased the skills they had learned in their respective sports. Parents and guardians filled the grandstand bleachers to witness the presentations and celebrate the achievements of the participants. During the event, trainees received certificates of participation, while trainers were awarded certificates of appreciation in recognition of their dedication and contributions.
Vice Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco, Executive Assistant Marlon Simbajon, and Dr. Atilano graced the culminating rites, representing Mayor Khymer Olaso. Their presence underscored the city government's commitment to youth development through sports.
