The Los Angeles Lakers star shooter Austin Reaves is reportedly seeking a higher salary through a maximum contract, as he could become a free agent this offseason if he chooses to opt out. According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, Reaves is looking to maximize his earning potential in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Contract Options
Brad Turner of Spectrum Sportsnet Live revealed that Reaves stands to make five years, $241 million if the Lakers offer him that deal. Alternatively, if he joins a team like the Chicago Bulls or the Brooklyn Nets, he could secure four years, $178 million. Turner noted that those teams are lurking around, waiting for an opportunity.
Hometown Discount?
Turner explained that based on what he has heard, Reaves wants the max contract. The question now is whether he will give the Lakers a hometown discount. Turner expressed uncertainty, saying, "Is he willing to give the Lakers a hometown deal? I'm not so sure about that. Maybe he does, but maybe his reps don't want that."
Reaves' Performance
In the previous season, Reaves averaged 23.3 points on 49.0 percent shooting, along with 5.5 assists and 4.7 rebounds over 51 games. He was a significant contributor to the Lakers, forming a top-three offensive option alongside Luka Doncic and LeBron James.
Lakers' Offseason Challenges
Beyond Reaves, the Lakers have several other issues to address. First, 23-year veteran LeBron James is entering free agency. Additionally, Deandre Ayton has a player option and may also leave the team. These developments will shape the Lakers' roster for the upcoming season.
