The local health office in Zamboanga City has recorded a total of 556 cases of dengue with three deaths since January this year, an official said.
Dengue Cases Decline After Initial Spike
Dr. Dulce Amor Miravite, head of the City Health Office, reported that dengue cases were high in January and February but declined in March, April, and May. The top 10 villages with the highest cases are Mercedes, Sta. Maria, Tumaga, Talon-Talon, Calarian, Mampang, Pasonanca, Ayala, Tugbungan, and Tulungatung.
Rainy Season Expected to Increase Cases
Miravite warned the public that cases are expected to rise again during the rainy months of June, July, and August, when mosquitoes commonly breed. However, she noted that the incidence this year is 31 percent lower than the same period in 2025, attributing this to ongoing information and cleanup campaigns by the local government and villages.
Dengue Awareness Month Activities
The City Health Office has lined up activities to raise public awareness and prevention efforts as June is observed nationwide as Dengue Awareness Month. These include school clean-up drives and fumigation operations in coordination with Brigada Eskwela for the upcoming school opening.
Miravite called on village officials and residents to sustain regular cleanliness campaigns and eliminate clean but stagnant water, which serves as breeding sites for dengue-carrier mosquitoes. She emphasized, "We have to remember that dengue-carrier mosquitoes breed on clean but stagnant water." She also advised the public to seek medical consultation immediately if they experience signs and symptoms of dengue.
