Filipina tennis icon Alex Eala will begin her historic campaign at the Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 9:00 PM Philippine time in London. Eala, 21, is the first Filipino player to compete in the most prestigious tennis tournament worldwide. She is seeded No. 29 and will face Mexican Renata Zarazúa in the women's singles event.
Eala vs. Zarazúa: A Rematch with Psychological Stakes
Zarazúa, 28, is a veteran of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour known for her defensive playing style, which contrasts sharply with Eala's aggressive approach. The two have met once before, with Zarazúa defeating Eala 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the W100 Cary in North Carolina in August 2024. That previous loss gives Zarazúa a psychological advantage, according to analysts.
However, Eala has significantly improved since then, having defeated several top-ranked players. She enters Wimbledon on the back of an impressive grass-court season, including a semifinal appearance at the Berlin Tennis Open, where she consecutively defeated top 10 players Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.
Doubles Event Participation
In addition to singles, Eala will compete in the women's doubles event at Wimbledon, partnering with Nikola Bartunkova of the Czech Republic. They will begin their campaign against Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia and American Sofia Kenin.
