Twelve-year-old Romarito Maquiling II made an impressive debut at the 2026 Palarong Pambansa, securing a gold medal in the elementary boys' 50-meter breaststroke and a bronze medal in the 100-meter breaststroke. Competing for the Davao Region, the swimmer from Nangan Elementary School in Davao Oriental quickly emerged as one of the standout young athletes in the national meet.
From Basketball Dreams to Swimming Success
Maquiling initially dreamed of playing basketball, inspired by his older sister, a former varsity player for St. John Paul II College of Davao. However, his father recognized his potential in swimming and encouraged him to try the sport. Despite initial doubts, Maquiling embraced swimming, dedicating himself to early morning workouts and balancing school with rigorous training. His parents, Arlyn L. Maquiling and Romanito Maquiling, supported him throughout, helping him develop discipline and perseverance.
A Surprising Victory
Maquiling admitted he did not expect to win gold at his first Palarong Pambansa. He focused on trusting his preparation and giving his best in every race. That mindset paid off when he touched the wall first in the 50-meter breaststroke, securing the gold medal. "I became so emotional because I didn't expect that I got the gold," he said. He later added a bronze medal in the 100-meter breaststroke, completing a memorable debut.
Gratitude and Future Goals
For Maquiling, the medals represent more than just victories. He expressed gratitude to his family, coaches, teammates, supporters, and God for helping him achieve this milestone. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue improving, represent the country in international competitions, and inspire other young athletes through his journey.
