Minglanilla Fire Claims Life of 83-Year-Old Woman
An 83-year-old woman died after her house in Purok Avocado, Barangay Calajo-an, Minglanilla caught fire early Sunday, May 31, 2026. The Minglanilla Municipal Police Station received the report from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) around 4:38 AM.
The victim was identified as Lita Abella, 83. She was unable to escape the burning house made of light materials, which quickly collapsed. Police investigators responded immediately to conduct an investigation.
According to initial investigation, the victim's brother, Alex Obsiama, said he woke up at that time to answer nature's call but noticed a fire starting in front. He was shocked to find that the fire had already engulfed his sister's house. He quickly sought help from neighbors, who called the fire department.
Due to the house being made of light materials, it quickly burned down with the victim unable to get out. Relatives said that due to the victim's age, she had difficulty moving and was alone at the time of the tragedy. Her child was not present because he was reportedly drinking in Linao-Lipata.
The child arrived past 6:00 AM and was described as still under the influence of alcohol. Police and firefighters suspect that the victim's lamp, believed to have fallen over or a candle, may have caused the fire.
