In an exciting development for local sports, a new grassroots program has been launched in the southern part of Cebu Province, spearheaded by 7th District Representative Patsy Calderon. This initiative, known as the Calderon Cup 21-under basketball tournament, is set to commence on March 21, marking a significant step in nurturing athletic talent at the community level.
Empowering Youth Through Sports
The primary goal of this tournament is to provide exposure for provincial athletes and identify new talents who can be guided through educational opportunities. All eight municipalities within the 7th District—Dumanjug, Ronda, Alcantara, Moalboal, Badian, Alegria, Malabuyoc, and Ginatillan—are actively preparing to participate in this competition. This program offers a substantial opportunity for the youth in the district who aspire to play in major leagues like Cesafi, UAAP, and NCAA but have lacked access to such platforms.
Expanding Beyond Basketball
According to Atty. Ramil Abing, a trusted associate of Congresswoman Calderon involved in this movement, the Calderon Cup will become an annual event in the district. Notably, the program will not be limited to basketball; it will also include volleyball, football, tennis, and other sporting events, broadening its impact and appeal.
Attracting Attention and Opportunities
Several coaches from schools in Cebu City have already expressed curiosity about the tournament, viewing it as a potential recruitment ground for players. The games will be accessible through live streaming, enhancing visibility and engagement. This shift from semi-commercial or open-category leagues to a dedicated grassroots-level competition represents a progressive move in local sports development.
As the 7th District gears up for this initiative, the community extends its gratitude to Congresswoman Patsy Calderon for her support and vision in fostering athletic growth and educational advancement among the youth.
