PSC, Pagcor Unite to Fast-Track PH Sports Development, Build Regional Centers
Gov't Agencies Align to Boost PH Sports, Build Regional Hubs

In a significant move to elevate the country's athletic prowess, two major government bodies have forged a strategic alliance. The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) are now pooling their resources and aligning their plans to fast-track national sports development, with the ultimate goal of producing world-class Filipino competitors.

Top-Level Alignment for National Sports Agenda

The partnership was solidified during a recent high-level meeting with Executive Secretary Ralph Recto. PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio and Pagcor Chairman Alejandro Tengco presented their commitment to synchronize priority projects and strategic initiatives. This alignment at the highest levels of government is seen as critical to ensuring that public investments efficiently translate into tangible results: modern sports facilities, wider athlete access, and clearer career pathways for the youth.

Executive Secretary Recto underscored that this collaboration reaffirms the government's dedication to investing in Filipino potential. He stated that the initiative aims to build not just champions in sports, but also foster national pride and create opportunities for communities across the archipelago. This drive is anchored on the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to pursue an all-out effort in sports and youth development, positioning athletics as a powerful platform for excellence and nation-building.

Focus on Grassroots and Infrastructure Revival

A central pillar of the discussed strategy is the ambitious vision to establish functional regional training centers in every province. To accelerate this, Chairman Gregorio emphasized the urgent need to identify and complete numerous unfinished or underutilized sports facilities across the country.

Key projects highlighted for immediate action include:

  • The Ilocos Norte Sports Institute and Research Building
  • Sports facilities in Siargao and the Zamboanga Peninsula
  • Projects within the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM)
  • The Athletic Bowl in Baguio City

Gregorio also pointed to a valuable resource: the vast tracts of unused land owned by State Universities and Colleges (SUCs). The PSC plans to collaborate with institutions like UP Mindanao, UP Diliman, and UP Los Baños to maximize these lands for sports development. He cited examples like the stalled construction of facilities at UP Mindanao, which began for the 2019 Palarong Pambansa, and the swimming pool in UP Diliman that has remained unfinished for nearly a decade.

"Let's upgrade and finish these facilities," Gregorio urged. "As an enabler, the PSC will be closely working with the LGUs while collaborating with SUCs to maximize and harness their unused lands with the intention of discovering and developing talent." He added that the commitment of National Sports Associations to establish their provincial training centers is crucial to these rehabilitation efforts.

Revitalizing Historic Venues and Boosting Sports Tourism

Running parallel to the regional push is the comprehensive plan to rehabilitate the historic Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila. This iconic hub of Philippine sports is set for a major revival. The renovation of the tennis center is nearing completion and is scheduled to be ready for the Philippine Women's Open WTA 125 tournament from January 26 to 31, 2026.

Furthermore, the complex's iconic baseball field, long in need of an update, will undergo a significant facelift. The football field will also be upgraded, and the adjacent Philippine Sports Plaza will be constructed. This new plaza, to be located along Adriatico Street, is designed to house a shopping mall and restaurants, integrating sports with commercial activity and tourism.

This multi-faceted approach—strengthening grassroots programs, reviving infrastructure, and enhancing sports tourism—is designed to create a sustainable ecosystem for Filipino athletes. The partnership between the PSC and Pagcor signals a consolidated, government-wide effort to transform Philippine sports from the ground up, driving both athletic excellence and local economic growth.
