Davao-Led Squad Aims for Asean Schools Basketball Glory

The Philippine national secondary boys' basketball team, spearheaded by athletes from Davao, remains undefeated and is poised to compete for the gold medal against Malaysia at the 14th Asean Schools Games. The championship game is scheduled for Thursday, November 27, 2025, at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Brunei.

Road to the Finals: Dominant Performances and a Key Victory

Represented by the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa), the 2025 Palarong Pambansa champion, and reinforced by players from Central Luzon (Clraa), Team Philippines secured its spot in the finals with a decisive 85-59 victory over Indonesia in the semifinals on Tuesday, November 25. The offensive effort was led by Rhysus Bajenting with 18 points, closely followed by Rene Clerk Baterbonia with 17 points, and Matt Jeric Cayetano contributing 16 points.

This title match will be a rematch for the two teams. The Philippines previously edged out Malaysia 76-74 in a tightly contested preliminary round game on November 21. Head coach Jess Linus Evangelio from Ateneo de Davao University expressed confidence, noting the team has gelled since their first encounter.

"We beat them by two points in the first game. Now, in the championship game, there's no pressure on us," Evangelio stated in an interview. "The first-game jitters are gone. The team has gelled and grown close. I made sure they stay motivated to get the gold tomorrow."

Overcoming Challenges with Defense and Determination

Coach Evangelio emphasized that his strategy revolves around a strong defensive game. "I stick to my mantra that defense wins championships. We're hoping and praying our defense will work out for us tomorrow," he said.

The team faces the final challenge with a shortened roster, having lost two players to injuries. Jhon Mark Peligrino was injured before the tournament, and Aaron Bayanban was hurt during the semifinals. This means the Philippines will compete for the gold with only 10 players.

Despite these setbacks, team morale is reportedly high. Evangelio is ensuring his players remain focused and driven. "They are very excited. I always remind them not to get complacent because it is still everybody's ball game," the decorated coach shared. He continually inspires them to represent both the country and Davao with pride, urging them to "give everything for the country."

Earlier in the tournament, the Philippine team showcased its dominance with overwhelming victories over Brunei (126-39) and Singapore (91-50). Malaysia's only loss in the competition so far was the narrow defeat against the Filipinos.

The complete roster includes players from Davraa and Clraa, supported by assistant coach Nathariel Sendio. The team received a formal send-off from DepEd Davao City Schools Superintendent Rey Solitario, highlighting the local support behind their international campaign.
