The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is setting its sights on establishing a major regional training center in Zamboanga City. This move is a direct acknowledgment of the city's outstanding and historic contributions to the nation's sporting landscape.

PSC Chairperson John Patrick Gregorio personally presented this significant proposal during a courtesy visit to Zamboanga City Mayor Khymer Olaso on Wednesday, January 14. The high-level meeting took place at City Hall, underscoring the project's importance.
In his discussions, Gregorio highlighted the city's most famous contribution: producing Hidilyn Diaz, the athlete who made history by winning the Philippines' first-ever Olympic gold medal. This achievement serves as the foundational inspiration for the planned facility.
Boosting Grassroots and Elite Sports
The core mission of the proposed regional training center is to create a powerful engine for sports development across the entire Zamboanga Peninsula. It aims to strengthen the pipeline from grassroots sports programs, where young talents are first discovered, all the way to nurturing elite athletes capable of competing on the world stage.
Mayor Olaso welcomed the PSC's initiative with open arms, expressing the local government's full commitment to a collaborative partnership. The PSC delegation was not alone in this pivotal visit. Chairperson Gregorio was accompanied by PSC Commissioner Edward Hayco and Chief of Staff Loujaye Sonido. The local government was represented by Councilor Elbert Atilano Sr. and his wife, Dr. Cecil Atilano, who serves as the city's sports director.
