Tagum City to Host 2026 Davraa Meet with Nearly 6,000 Student-Athletes
Tagum City Hosts 2026 Davraa Meet with 6,000 Athletes

Tagum City is set to transform into a vibrant hub of youth sports and regional pride as it prepares to host the 2026 Davao Regional Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet next month. This major sporting event will bring together nearly 6,000 student-athletes for a week of intense competition and camaraderie.

Massive Participation and Event Details

Organizers have confirmed that 5,963 athletes, supported by 1,108 coaches and 235 chaperones, will converge at the Davao del Norte Commission Sports Complex from February 23 to 28. The event, officially branded as the 2026 Davraa Meet, carries the inspiring theme “Learn, Compete, Rise till Make Future Champions.” It serves as a crucial buildup for the Palarong Pambansa 2026, scheduled for May in Agusan del Sur.

Backed by the Department of Education-Davao del Norte and the Tagum City local government, this edition continues the city’s successful hosting streak. Jenelito Atillo, Department of Education (DepEd) Davao Region spokesperson, emphasized that the meet goes beyond winning medals. “We want our athletes to grow—not only in competition, but in discipline, character, and sportsmanship,” he stated, highlighting the event’s educational and developmental goals.

Expanded Sports Program and New Opportunities

The 2026 Davraa Meet introduces three new sporting events, reflecting the region’s growing interest in diverse athletic disciplines. Among the highlights is the debut of weightlifting, which has already generated strong enthusiasm. Seven of the region’s 11 DepEd divisions—including Davao City, Davao de Oro, and Digos City—have confirmed their participation in this category.

Additionally, the meet expands opportunities for female athletes with the inclusion of football for secondary girls. Futsal will also make its debut at the elementary level, extending beyond its traditional senior high school slot. Atillo noted, “These additions reflect how sports in the region continue to evolve. We are opening doors for more students to discover where they can excel.” Discussions are ongoing regarding whether these new events will be included in the official medal tally.

Why Tagum City Remains the Preferred Host

Atillo explained that Tagum City was chosen again due to requests from stakeholders who view Davao del Norte as an ideal venue for large-scale sporting events. The decision is based on the city’s modern facilities, excellent accessibility, and strong local support. Feedback from previous participants has consistently praised Tagum’s accommodations, venue readiness, and overall athlete experience.

Organizers have assured schools and delegations that billeting, security, peace and order, and safety protocols will be prioritized throughout the six-day competition. Government agencies have been tapped to ensure smooth operations. Atillo added that the local government remains committed to supporting DepEd and student-athletes, thanking partner agencies for their sustained cooperation.

With these preparations in place, the 2026 Davraa Meet promises to be a landmark event, fostering not only athletic excellence but also personal growth and regional unity among the youth of Davao.
