Smart Communications has switched on 11 new 4G/LTE cell sites in the municipalities of Maribojoc and Antequera in Bohol, significantly enhancing communication and internet services in these areas. The network expansion is part of a broader effort to strengthen digital connectivity in local communities and support the digitalization initiatives of the local government.
Importance of Maribojoc and Antequera
Maribojoc and Antequera play crucial roles in the economy and culture of Bohol. Maribojoc is known as a fishing hub and features ecotourism destinations that showcase the abundance of coastal and mountain resources. Antequera, on the other hand, is famous for its basket-weaving industry, which provides livelihoods for many families and preserves the town's traditional skills and culture.
Improved connectivity is expected to benefit livelihoods, tourism, education, and emergency preparedness in these communities. “For a long time, connectivity has been a challenge in some parts of these municipalities. With the activation of these new sites, we are enabling our constituents to stay connected, supporting their daily activities, livelihoods, and access to online education for our learners in time for the opening of classes. We thank Smart for supporting our digitalization efforts in the district,” said John Geesnell Yap, a local official.
Beneficiaries Share Impact
One of the beneficiaries is Monina Dela Cruz, 40, a sari-sari store owner in Barangay Bantolinao, Antequera, and a Smart Ka-partner retailer. “Because of the improved signal in our area, I now have an additional source of income. I’m thankful for this opportunity and to be able to help my neighbors with their load needs,” Dela Cruz said. She also emphasized the importance of reliable connectivity during emergencies and natural disasters, making it easier to ask for help, communicate with loved ones, and access vital information.
Katherine Bustaliño, a barangay councilor in Barangay Lagtangan, Maribojoc, also expressed gratitude. “This will greatly benefit our community. Whether for work, school, or business, we can now stay connected more easily through Smart and TNT’s enhanced connectivity and value-packed offers,” Bustaliño said.
Continued Expansion
As the telecommunications infrastructure expansion continues in the province, more communities in Bohol are expected to benefit from stronger and more reliable communication services, supporting the local economy, education, and the delivery of basic services to residents.
