NFA: Ample Rice Supply, No Shortage Despite High Demand

NFA Confirms Sufficient Rice Supply Nationwide, No Shortage Expected

The National Food Authority (NFA) has emphasized that there is an ample supply of rice across the country, despite long queues of consumers at KADIWA centers for the government's P20-per-kilo "Benteng Bigas" program. According to NFA Administrator Larry Lacson, the public should not be alarmed, as rice milling operations continue uninterrupted and reserves are in place to meet consumer needs.

Buffer Stock and Import Plans Ensure Stability

Based on data from the Department of Agriculture as of March 2026, the national buffer stock of rice exceeds 2.3 million metric tons, which is sufficient to cover the next three months. Additionally, rice imports from Vietnam and Thailand are ongoing to guarantee a steady supply, while the upcoming summer harvest in various provinces is expected to further bolster stocks.

Market Prices Drive Demand for Subsidized Rice

Currently, the price of regular rice in the market ranges from P50 to P55 per kilo, leading to a surge in demand for the government's affordable rice program. The NFA and DA have assured that distribution through KADIWA centers and local government unit outlets will continue to mitigate the impact of high commodity prices on Filipino families.
