DTI-3 Urges Buying Certified Electrical Products for Fire Safety

DTI-3 Issues Critical Fire Prevention Reminder for Consumers and Businesses

The Department of Trade and Industry–Region 3 (DTI-3) has issued a timely and crucial reminder to both consumers and business establishments across Central Luzon, urging them to prioritize the purchase of certified electrical products. This advisory comes as the Philippines observes Fire Prevention Month throughout March, a period when heightened awareness and proactive measures are essential for public safety.

Certified Products as a Key Fire Prevention Strategy

DTI-3 emphasized that selecting certified electrical appliances and devices plays a vital role in strengthening fire prevention efforts, particularly during the dry season when the risk of fire incidents escalates significantly. The agency specifically advised the public to exercise caution when buying electrical items such as extension cords, consumer electronics, circuit breakers, lighting and wiring products, and various household appliances. Ensuring these products meet established safety standards is a fundamental step in mitigating potential hazards.

Identifying Legitimate Certifications: PS Mark and ICC Sticker

Consumers are strongly urged to verify the presence of the Philippine Standard (PS) Mark or the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) Sticker before making any purchases. These markings serve as concrete proof that the items have undergone rigorous testing and comply with the stringent requirements of Philippine National Standards. DTI-3 also issued a warning regarding imported electrical products, especially those sold online or through illegal distributors. Imported products subject to mandatory certification must display a valid ICC sticker issued by the DTI to ensure their safety and compliance.

Shared Responsibility in Ensuring Product Safety

Edna Dizon, DTI-3 Regional Director, highlighted that ensuring product certification is a shared responsibility between businesses and consumers. "Fire prevention starts with informed decisions," Dizon stated. "Purchasing electrical appliances and fire safety equipment from legitimate establishments with a valid PS License or ICC Certificate significantly reduces the risk of accidents caused by substandard products." This collaborative approach is essential for fostering a safer environment for all.

Ongoing Monitoring and Enforcement Efforts

To uphold these standards, DTI-3 continues to conduct comprehensive monitoring and enforcement operations across Central Luzon. These initiatives aim to prevent the sale and distribution of uncertified and potentially hazardous electrical products. "Electrical safety is a critical component of fire prevention," Dizon added. "By choosing certified products and practicing responsible usage, we can protect lives, properties, and livelihoods." The agency's proactive stance underscores its commitment to public welfare.

Public Encouraged to Report Non-Compliant Products

In support of these efforts, the public is encouraged to report any substandard or uncertified electrical products to the DTI-3 Consumer Protection Division. Individuals can also visit their nearest DTI office for assistance and guidance. This call to action empowers consumers to play an active role in maintaining market integrity and enhancing community safety during Fire Prevention Month and beyond.
