The Department of Transportation (DOTr) officially commenced the distribution of fuel subsidies for all public utility vehicle drivers and operators on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. This initiative aims to alleviate the impact of escalating oil prices, which have been driven by ongoing unrest in the Middle East region.
Presidential Oversight at PITX
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. personally supervised the launch of the fuel assistance program during his visit to the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX). His direct involvement underscores the government's commitment to supporting the transportation sector during this challenging period.
Substantial Budget Allocation
In a separate press conference, DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez revealed that the government has earmarked a substantial P2.5 billion budget for the agency's fuel subsidy program. This funding will provide crucial financial relief to 245,066 drivers and 1,180,783 operators across various public transport modes nationwide.
The comprehensive program encompasses both modern and traditional jeepneys, taxis, transport network vehicle services (TNVS), buses, point-to-point buses, school buses, Filcab vehicles, UV Express units, tricycles, and delivery services.
Detailed Subsidy Breakdown
Secretary Lopez provided specific details regarding the subsidy amounts for different categories of beneficiaries:
- Operators of buses, modern UV Express, and both traditional and modern jeepneys will receive P10,000 in cash subsidy per unit.
- Drivers of buses, school transport vehicles, taxis, and both modern and traditional UV Express units will receive P5,000 each.
- Operators of school transport, traditional UV Express, jeepneys, and Filcab vehicles will receive P5,000 per unit.
- Taxi operators will receive P2,000 per unit.
Additional Support for Some Drivers
Drivers of modern and traditional jeepneys, Filcab vehicles, and TNVS who have already received P5,000 in cash subsidy from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will obtain an additional P1,500 from the DOTr program. This layered approach ensures that those most affected receive adequate support.
Lopez also announced that fuel subsidy distribution for tricycle drivers and delivery riders will be implemented after the Holy Week period, allowing for proper logistical planning.
Multiple Distribution Methods
The cash subsidies will be disbursed through various convenient channels to accommodate different preferences and accessibility needs. These methods include Fuel Subsidy Cards, bank-to-bank transfers, manager's checks, cash payouts, and e-wallet transfers that can be withdrawn without any additional fees.
This multifaceted distribution strategy aims to ensure that all eligible beneficiaries can access their subsidies efficiently, regardless of their banking status or technological access. The program represents a significant government intervention to stabilize the public transportation sector during a period of economic pressure from international oil market volatility.
