Angeles City Mayor Carmelo “Jon” Lazatin II is planning to procure modern rescue and disaster response equipment following a building collapse in Barangay Balibago that killed 30 people.
Mayor’s Statement on Disaster Response
Speaking at the Balitaan Talakayan of the Central Luzon Media Association Pampanga, Lazatin said the tragedy highlighted the need for the city to strengthen its disaster response capabilities.
During the 18-day rescue and retrieval operations, various local government units and national agencies provided specialized equipment to detect signs of life beneath the rubble and ensure responder safety.
Equipment Needs and Terrain Considerations
“We saw the equipment they used. From there, we can plan what we need because we have different terrains, so we are looking at what is most appropriate,” Lazatin said.
The mayor added that the local government is considering acquiring life-saving equipment for flood and earthquake emergencies, which will allow the city to respond more efficiently.
Modern Technology for Structural Assessment
In addition to rescue tools, Lazatin said the city is exploring the use of modern technology to assess building structural integrity.
“We need new technology, such as programs or software that can quickly check structural integrity when documents are submitted, to speed up assessment and permit issuance,” he said.
Lazatin also mentioned that the city may review existing rules, resolutions, and ordinances related to construction and public safety to help prevent similar tragedies.
