Mayor Nestor Archival of Cebu has expressed openness to adjusting the operations of the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (CBRT) system in response to mounting traffic complaints. The mayor acknowledged that congestion is a normal occurrence when new road changes or rerouting schemes are implemented, as authorities continue to monitor the system's performance on the ground.
Addressing Traffic Concerns
Archival emphasized that the current setup, enforced by the Department of Transportation (DOTr), is necessary to finally launch the long-delayed mass transit system and identify required adjustments. He assured the public that changes are not intended to cause inconvenience but to organize traffic and instill discipline among drivers regarding proper routes and stops.
Potential Lane Adjustments
The mayor indicated that the city might consider allowing other vehicles, including public utility vehicles (PUVs), to use certain portions of the CBRT lanes, provided they do not interfere with bus operations. This potential flexibility aims to balance efficiency with practical traffic flow needs.
Enforcement and Advisory
Meanwhile, Raquel Arce, head of the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO), reminded motorists that the dedicated CBRT lane is already in effect on Osmeña Boulevard, stretching from Fuente Osmeña Circle to the Cebu South Bus Terminal. In a traffic advisory issued on March 16, Arce clarified that the BRT lane is exclusively for CBRT operations and urged drivers to use alternative routes whenever possible to avoid congestion.
The ongoing evaluation of the CBRT system reflects efforts to optimize public transport in Cebu while addressing immediate traffic challenges faced by commuters and motorists alike.
