MANIBELA: P1 PUV Fare Hike Insufficient vs Fuel Prices

MANIBELA Slams P1 PUV Fare Increase as Inadequate Amid Soaring Fuel Prices

Transport group MANIBELA has publicly criticized the recently approved P1 fare hike for all public utility vehicles (PUVs), labeling it insufficient in the face of persistently rising oil prices. According to MANIBELA President Mar Valbuena, the modest increase fails to address the financial struggles of drivers, who he claims are earning less than beggars soliciting at the back of jeepneys.

Details of the Approved Fare Adjustment

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has mandated that the P1 increase will take effect for traditional jeepneys, raising the minimum fare for the first four kilometers from P13 to P14. Additionally, the per-kilometer rate will see a 20-centavo increment, moving from P1.80 to P2. For modern jeepneys, the minimum fare will jump by two pesos, from P15 to P17. It is important to note that this adjustment does not apply to regular taxis or motorcycle taxis.

MANIBELA's Initial Request and Driver Struggles

Prior to the LTFRB's decision, MANIBELA had lobbied for a P2 fare increase specifically for traditional jeepneys. The group argued that many drivers are losing between P400 and P500 daily due to the high cost of diesel, which has severely impacted their livelihoods. This financial strain has forced drivers to alter their schedules to avoid competition for passengers, particularly during off-peak hours, further complicating their ability to earn a sustainable income.

Broader Implications for Public Transport

The ongoing debate highlights the broader challenges within the public transport sector, where fare adjustments often lag behind economic realities like fuel price fluctuations. MANIBELA's stance underscores the urgent need for more responsive policies to support drivers and ensure the viability of PUV operations. As oil prices continue to climb, the adequacy of such incremental fare hikes remains a contentious issue, potentially affecting commuter costs and service reliability in the long term.
