In a powerful homecoming event, Watsons Philippines and Operation Smile Philippines have reinforced their twelve-year partnership, continuing their vital mission to provide free cleft lip and palate surgeries to Filipino children. This collaborative effort has now transformed the lives of over 2,500 children, offering them not just new smiles, but also renewed confidence and brighter futures.
A Heartfelt Return to Bicol Roots
The recent surgical mission was held in the Bicol region, a place of profound significance as it was the site of Operation Smile Philippines' very first missions. This homecoming was made possible through a partnership with Daraga Doctors' Hospital, which provided the medical facility and crucial operational support. The mission saw 35 Watsons local volunteers, company officers, and even volunteers from Superdrug, the UK health and beauty retailer under the A.S. Watson Group, join forces.
For the organizations, this was more than a celebration of milestones. It was a heartfelt return to the community that sparked a nationwide movement and a strong reaffirmation of Watsons' commitment to championing health, wellness, and care beyond the walls of its stores.
Personal Stories and Powerful Partnerships
The impact of this long-standing advocacy is embodied by stories like that of Jayden, a past beneficiary of the Watsons-OSP 'Give A Smile' program. A talented singer, Jayden received life-changing surgery and is now thriving, a living testament to the program's power.
Sharon Decapia, SAVP for Marketing Communications, PR & Sustainability at Watsons Philippines, shared, "We want to do more than enhance a look; we want to literally transform a child's smile and life, giving them a better chance at health and happiness."
The success in Bicol was heavily reliant on local support. Dr. Salvacion Macinas, Medical Director of Daraga Doctors Hospitals, stated that the hospital wholeheartedly accepted the mission, even purchasing new beds and assigning dedicated nurses to ensure the best care for the beneficiaries, helping families overcome financial barriers.
Corporate Culture of Care and a Full-Circle Journey
Watsons integrates its people deeply into this mission. Employees from head offices and local stores volunteer actively, making it a personal experience that reflects the company's "Look Good. Do Good. Feel Great." philosophy.
Ms. Corinne Marte, Watsons Philippines' People and Organization Development Director, emphasized that this initiative is directly tied to the company's culture of care, inspiring employees and allowing them to express that care far beyond their regular roles.
For Operation Smile, the Bicol mission was a full-circle moment. Dr. Gerard Ocampo, OSP's Cleft Surgeon Team Lead, noted the deep personal significance, tracing their connection to the region back to 1982. He expressed immense gratitude for Watsons' consistent financial support, volunteer mobilization, and nationwide awareness campaigns, which are vital to closing the gap in care.
The event was also attended by Malina Ngai, Group CEO of AS Watson, underscoring the global support for the local mission.
Watsons invites everyone to be part of this movement of hope.
