Provincial Veterinarian Mary Rose Vincoy clarified on Friday, July 10, 2026, that skin irritation in pigs caused by ashfall from the Kanlaon Volcano eruption should not be mistaken for African Swine Fever (ASF). She assured that Cebu Province remains free from ASF.
Distinguishing Symptoms
According to Vincoy, while monitoring continues after the volcano's eruption on Thursday, July 9, 2026, symptoms related to ash inhalation or exposure are quite different from those of ASF. "The disease symptoms relative to ashfall are quite different because of the fever. In ASF, it is very evident," she stated when asked about the difference between skin irritation and ASF symptoms.
Vincoy provided these clarifications for public awareness to ensure that backyard and commercial raisers do not panic over minor skin conditions in their animals.
Cebu Remains ASF-Free
She confirmed that Cebu Province is completely safe and free from ASF. While ASF is a deadly viral disease, skin irritation due to ashfall can be treated with preventive measures.
