The Lapu-Lapu City Government has distributed a fuel subsidy worth P1.39 million to 464 fishermen and motorized banca operators. Each beneficiary received P3,000 as assistance to cope with the rising fuel prices.
Mayor Ma. Cynthia 'Cindi' King-Chan, together with Councilor Annabeth Cuizon, led the distribution on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. She said this is part of the city's response to the continuous increase in oil prices related to the Middle East crisis.
According to Mayor King-Chan, the P1,392,000 fund used for the subsidy was originally allocated for the Sad-Sad Festival during the 505th Kadaugan sa Mactan celebration, but was realigned to prioritize assistance to sectors severely affected by the fuel price hike.
Based on data from the City Agriculture and Fisheries Office and the City Social Welfare and Development Office, 328 beneficiaries came from Olango Island while 136 were from mainland barangays.
Mayor King-Chan clarified that the subsidy was given only to legitimate fishermen and motorized banca operators registered with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and with active insurance coverage.
