The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has condemned the circulation of fake images depicting floods along EDSA, which were actually AI-generated. The images, shared on social media, showed gutter-deep floodwater filled with trash along EDSA in Quezon City. According to the MMDA, the original photo was taken during the prepositioning of L-shaped flood barriers in front of Camp Aguinaldo as part of preparations for Typhoon Inday. The perpetrators altered details and added trash to create a negative impression. The MMDA advised the public to remain vigilant and verify information obtained online.
AI-Generated Images Cause Confusion
The MMDA clarified that the images were not real but were created using artificial intelligence. The agency emphasized that the flood barriers were already in place as a precautionary measure, and the actual situation on EDSA did not reflect the fake images. The MMDA urged netizens to be cautious and to check the authenticity of content before sharing it.
Public Urged to Verify Information
In response to the incident, the MMDA reiterated the importance of media literacy and responsible sharing online. The agency called on the public to rely on official sources for accurate information, especially during emergencies such as typhoons. The spread of false information can cause unnecessary panic and undermine disaster preparedness efforts.
