Green Sea Turtle Safely Returned to Natural Habitat in Zamboanga Sibugay

In a heartening display of environmental stewardship, authorities in Zamboanga Sibugay province have successfully released a Green Sea Turtle back to its natural coastal habitat. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) confirmed this conservation achievement on Thursday, April 9, 2026, highlighting a collaborative effort between citizens and government agencies.

Voluntary Surrender Leads to Swift Action

The Green Sea Turtle was voluntarily surrendered by a concerned citizen to the Mabuhay Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (Menro). Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Menro immediately coordinated with the Biodiversity Conservation Unit of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in Imelda town to ensure the turtle's well-being.

A thorough health assessment was conducted by the team, which confirmed the turtle was in excellent condition with no visible injuries, making it fully fit for release back into the wild. This careful evaluation underscores the professional handling of marine wildlife in the region.

Tagging and Release Procedure

Prior to its return to the ocean, the turtle was carefully tagged on both flippers—a standard practice for monitoring and research purposes in conservation efforts. The release took place last week in the coastal waters of Malinao village, Mabuhay, Zamboanga Sibugay, an area chosen for its suitability as a natural habitat for the species.

The operation was led by key environmental officials, including Forester William Palisoc, Head of the Coastal Resource Management Unit (CRMU), and Forester John Kaisan Alkuino, Head of the Biodiversity Conservation Unit. They were supported by CRMU staff and local policemen, ensuring a safe and orderly process.

Emphasizing Collaboration and Conservation

In a statement, the DENR-Zamboanga Peninsula emphasized that this activity highlights how citizens and authorities can work together effectively to protect marine life. This successful release demonstrates the critical importance of responsible action and inter-agency collaboration in conserving wildlife, particularly in provinces like Zamboanga Sibugay where marine biodiversity is a valuable natural resource.

The incident serves as a positive example of community involvement in environmental protection, encouraging others to report or surrender wildlife in need. Such efforts are essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and preserving endangered species like the Green Sea Turtle for future generations.
