An injured green sea turtle, rescued last week after becoming entangled in a fish corral, is now under the care of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Zamboanga del Sur. The DENR-Zamboanga Peninsula confirmed the rescue on Sunday, May 15, 2026, highlighting a swift response from local wildlife teams to protect this vulnerable marine species.
Rescue Operation and Initial Assessment
The turtle was found trapped in a fish corral, locally known as a bunsod, in Picanan, Kumalarang, Zamboanga del Sur. Upon receiving a report from the community, the wildlife rescue team of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro)-Guipos quickly mobilized to the scene. They secured the turtle and conducted an initial health assessment, noting a minor injury from the entanglement.
Medical Care and Recovery Plans
Following the rescue, the turtle was immediately transported to the DENR Regional Wildlife Rescue Center in Baclay, Tukuran, Zamboanga del Sur. There, it is receiving further medical care and monitoring to ensure a full recovery. Once the turtle has healed, authorities plan to release it back into its natural habitat, emphasizing the importance of rehabilitation for conservation efforts.
