The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has warned that the alert status of Kanlaon Volcano could be raised to Alert Level 3 if its eruptions become more frequent in the coming days.
Current Alert Level and Recent Eruption
Kanlaon Volcano remains under Alert Level 2 following a moderately strong eruption on Wednesday morning. The eruption lasted three minutes and produced a thick gray ash plume that rose two to three kilometers above the crater.
PHIVOLCS continues to monitor the volcano's activity, recording volcanic earthquakes, occasional ash emissions, and sustained release of volcanic gas.
Potential for Increased Activity
According to PHIVOLCS, if eruptions become more frequent, the likelihood of a magmatic eruption increases due to rising magma. This could prompt an escalation to Alert Level 3, indicating a high level of volcanic unrest and potential for hazardous eruption.
Authorities are urging residents living within the four-kilometer permanent danger zone to evacuate and remain vigilant against possible pyroclastic density currents and toxic gas emissions from Kanlaon Volcano.
