The Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) conducted a thorough inspection of the company's site, which led to a formal recommendation for closure of the chemical discharge pathway. Based on these findings, Mayor Gonzales ordered the operational suspension to prevent further environmental harm.
The local government has specifically required Unimax Steel to install a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) as a condition for resuming operations. Once properly implemented, this treatment facility is expected to effectively manage wastewater and eliminate potential threats to community health and the local ecosystem.

Residents from Barangays San Jose Malino, San Juan, and adjacent areas have reported a foul-smelling substance flowing through waterways that eventually reach the Abacan River. Multiple complainants described the odor as resembling tear gas and noted that it has caused recurring health issues among those living near the affected areas.
"To our residents in Barangay Malino and San Juan, we are doing our part in addressing this issue," Mayor Gonzales assured the community during his announcement of the suspension order.
