Brown Thimble Jellyfish Swarm Lapu-Lapu Waters

A large swarm of brown thimble jellyfish has been reported in the coastal waters of Barangay Sta. Rosa and Causeway in Lapu-Lapu City. Field responders from the Lapu-Lapu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) waded into the shallow waters using nets with long handles after receiving reports of an unprecedented influx of these jellyfish spreading across the area.

Emergency Response Operations

The emergency operation involved capturing large clusters of jellyfish directly from the water and transporting them to the shore for deep burial under sand. The unusual swarm was first noticed at Marigondon Beach but has since spread to Barangay Sta. Rosa and the Causeway, marking the first time such an event has occurred in these areas.

Public Advisories and Safety Measures

Although authorities have not yet imposed an official ban on public swimming, swimmers and beachgoers are being warned that this brown jellyfish species can cause severe itching and skin swelling lasting up to a week if stung by its venomous parts. Cenro advises residents and fishermen to avoid visible clusters of brown thimble jellyfish and to immediately apply vinegar to the affected area if accidentally stung or pierced.
