Eight people were killed and two remain missing after a landslide struck a farm in Sitio Fundao, Barangay Poblacion, Malapatan, Sarangani on Friday morning. The Malapatan Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) Incident Commander and Head, Mark Christopher Quiño, reported that ten individuals were buried by the soil collapse.
Landslide Details
The landslide occurred on a farm located approximately 500 meters from the Sitio Fundao community. According to the MDRRMO, two families resided in the area, including five elderly, five children, and several senior citizens. The exact number of senior citizens was not specified.
Search and Rescue Challenges
Authorities continue search and rescue operations to locate the two missing persons. However, rescuers face difficulties as the site is only accessible on foot. The MDRRMO is coordinating with the Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, and Bureau of Fire Protection for ongoing operations.
Wider Impact of Heavy Rains
Meanwhile, continuous rains and flash floods have affected 115 households from two barangays. Residents have been evacuated to evacuation centers, where they are expected to stay until their communities are safe. Local officials are appealing for assistance, particularly food packs and clean drinking water, as most water sources have been contaminated.
