Urgent Aid Needed in Cebu's Asturias Over a Week After Typhoon Tino's Wrath
More than a week after Typhoon Tino made landfall, several barangays in the municipality of Asturias, Cebu, continue to endure severe hardship and are in desperate need of assistance. The typhoon, which struck on November 4, 2025, caused devastating flash floods and inflicted widespread damage across the province, with Asturias emerging as one of the communities finding it most difficult to recover from the destruction.
MAP Sounds Alarm on Davao City's Flood Preparedness
In the wake of the disaster in Cebu, the Mindanao Alliance for Progress (MAP) is issuing a strong call to action. The group is urging the Davao City government, civil society organizations, and the general public to implement stronger measures to ensure the city is ready for heavy rainfall and other weather-related emergencies. MAP Coordinator Mayet Valdez pointed to a recent report from the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) as a critical wake-up call, revealing that several sections of Davao City's newly constructed flood control structures have already sustained damage just months after their completion.
"Dabawenyos take pride in their city and are known for their loyalty to their leaders," Valdez stated. "But this is not about politics — it’s about preparedness and making sure everyone is safe." She highlighted the city's history with flooding, including a deadly event in 2011, as a reason why complacency is not an option. "We have to act now — before the rains arrive," she emphasized.
A Collective Call for Accountability and Action
Valdez stressed that while Davao City is widely recognized for its discipline and good governance, disasters do not respect boundaries. The safety of residents, she argued, hinges on constant review, diligent maintenance, and strict accountability in both infrastructure and disaster response systems.
The appeal from MAP extends beyond government officials to include:
- Engineers and construction professionals
- Civic organizations and community groups
- Ordinary citizens and residents
The alliance urges a collaborative effort to reassess flood-prone zones, verify the integrity of flood control systems, and prepare evacuation centers and emergency protocols ahead of the anticipated arrival of more rains. The group also encourages residents to stay informed through official channels, report any early signs of infrastructure damage, and follow all public advisories closely.
"Our goal is simple," Valdez concluded. "We want a Davao City that is not only proud and peaceful, but also prepared and protected — no matter how strong the storm or how far its reach."
