Bogo City Authorities Report No Major Issues Following 5.4 Magnitude Earthquake

Local authorities in Bogo City have confirmed that no major structural damage or significant incidents occurred after a magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck the area on Monday, April 6, 2026. Initial assessments are ongoing, but early reports indicate the tremor, which lasted approximately one to two minutes, primarily caused alarm among residents without leading to severe consequences.

Residents Experience Trauma and Alarm

In a phone interview with SunStar Cebu, Bogo City Assistant Commandant Joseph Mark Monleon highlighted the psychological impact on the community. He stated that many residents are experiencing trauma, as this marks the second earthquake to hit the city since last year. Monleon explained, "Many are already traumatized because this is the second time we’ve experienced an earthquake since last year." The authorities received numerous reports from individuals who were alarmed by the quake, with at least three residents particularly affected by the event.

Business Closures and Safety Precautions

As a safety measure, several large establishments, including popular fast-food chains, temporarily suspended operations following the earthquake. Monleon noted that these closures were precautionary and aimed at ensuring public safety. Fortunately, no classes were disrupted, as the Department of Education school year had already concluded on March 31, preventing any educational interruptions.

Authorities Urge Calm and Alertness

Assistant Commandant Monleon emphasized the importance of remaining calm and vigilant during such incidents. He urged the public to avoid panic or rushing, which could lead to accidents. "Stay alert and remain calm, and avoid panicking or rushing, especially considering what happened before that could lead to accidents," he advised. This guidance is part of broader efforts to promote safety and preparedness in the face of natural disasters.

The earthquake serves as a reminder of the region's vulnerability to seismic activity, and authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while encouraging community resilience and adherence to safety protocols.
