Cebu Province Mobilizes Mass Evacuation as Tropical Depression Basyang Strikes
In a swift response to the threat posed by Tropical Depression Basyang on February 6, 2026, authorities in Cebu province executed a large-scale evacuation, relocating over 1,500 residents from vulnerable areas to ensure their safety amid the storm's impact.
Immediate Evacuation of 1,508 Individuals Across Multiple Municipalities
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported that a total of 1,508 individuals were immediately evacuated from 12 municipalities across Cebu. These evacuees originated from communities including:
- Samboan
- Ginatilan
- Santander
- Alegria
- Barili
- Sogod
- Dumanjug
- Sibonga
- Toledo
- Boljoon
- Daanbantayan
- Danao
- Oslob
These areas are known for experiencing heavy rainfall and are particularly prone to flooding, especially in coastal and riverside communities where residents face heightened risks during tropical storms.
Precautionary Measures and Temporary Shelter for Displaced Families
Among those evacuated were at least 66 families from the Tent City in Barangay San Roque, who had been previously displaced by Typhoon Tino. As a precautionary measure, these families were temporarily relocated to the San Roque Gym in Talisay City to safeguard them from potential hazards brought by Basyang.
In addition to the evacuations, the PDRRMO suspended work in several municipalities, including Badian, Dalaguete, Samboan, Carcar, Argao, Balamban, Barili, Danao, Compostela, Cordova, and Dumanjug. Tourist activities were also temporarily halted across the province to prevent visitors from being exposed to hazardous conditions.
Transport Disruptions and Stranded Passengers Assisted
The storm's impact led to the cancellation of sea travel, leaving 397 passengers stranded at local ports. Authorities ensured that these passengers received necessary assistance and were provided with temporary shelter at their respective ports, minimizing discomfort during the travel suspension.
Governor Baricuatro's Hands-On Leadership and Inspection
Early Friday, Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro conducted a thorough inspection after returning from China on Thursday. She personally visited critical sites such as the Mananga River and local hospitals to verify their preparedness for emergency responses.
Governor Baricuatro also monitored weather conditions from the newly established Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Barangay Apas, Cebu City, demonstrating proactive governance in disaster management.
Assurance of Preparedness and Call for Vigilance
Reflecting on the series of disasters that have impacted Cebu during her term, Governor Baricuatro assured residents that the province is well-prepared. Relief items and food packs are ready for distribution to affected communities, ensuring swift aid if needed.
She called on all Cebuanos to stay vigilant, follow official news sources, and heed instructions from disaster and emergency responders to minimize risks during the storm. This emphasis on community cooperation highlights the integrated approach to safety during natural calamities.
