Cebu Province Evacuates Over 1,500 Residents Amid Typhoon Basyang Threat

In a swift response to the impact of Typhoon Basyang, the Province of Cebu has evacuated more than 1,500 individuals from multiple localities as of Friday, February 6, 2026. The evacuation efforts were coordinated to ensure public safety as the typhoon brought heavy rains and heightened risks of flooding across the region.

Immediate Evacuation and Safety Measures

Among those evacuated were 66 families from Tent City in Barangay San Roque, who had previously lost their homes due to Typhoon Tino. These families were temporarily relocated to the San Roque Gym in Talisay City to secure their safety during Typhoon Basyang. The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported that a total of 1,508 individuals were quickly moved from 12 localities, including cities and municipalities such as Samboan, Ginatilan, Santander, Alegria, Barili, Sogod, Dumanjug, Sibonga, Toledo, Boljoon, Daanbantayan, Danao, and Oslob.

These areas, particularly those near coastlines and rivers, experienced intense rainfall and faced significant flood hazards. To mitigate risks, work suspensions were implemented in several cities, including Badian, Dalaguete, Samboan, Carcar, Argao, Balamban, Barili, Danao, Compostela, Cordova, and Dumanjug. Additionally, all tourist destinations in the province were closed to visitors to prevent any travel-related dangers.

Transport Disruptions and Stranded Passengers

The typhoon also led to the cancellation of ship voyages from ports across Cebu Province. According to data from the Philippine Coast Guard as of 4:00 PM on Friday, approximately 1,181 passengers were stranded at various ports. Local authorities are currently providing assistance to these individuals to ensure their well-being during the disruption.

Governor Baricuatro's Hands-On Leadership

Governor Pamela Baricuatro took immediate action upon her return from China on Thursday, conducting inspections early Friday to assess the province's preparedness. Her inspections focused on critical infrastructure, such as the Mananga River, and provincial hospitals to verify their readiness for emergency responses.

Governor Baricuatro personally monitored weather conditions from the new emergency operations center (EOC) at the PDRRMO in Barangay Apas, Cebu City. Reflecting on the series of disasters that have affected Cebu during her term since last year, she reassured residents of the province's preparedness. She announced that relief items and food packs are already prepared for distribution to localities impacted by Typhoon Basyang, emphasizing a proactive approach to disaster management.

This coordinated effort highlights Cebu's commitment to safeguarding its residents amid natural calamities, with ongoing monitoring and support to address the typhoon's effects.
