Death Toll Climbs to 39 in Basilan Ferry Tragedy as Recovery Efforts Persist
The number of fatalities from the sunken roll-on/roll-off (Roro) ferry M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 in the waters of Basilan has increased to 39, as search and recovery operations continue one week after the incident. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), leading the recovery efforts, reported that three additional bodies were recovered on Sunday, February 1, 2026.
Details of the Latest Recoveries and Ongoing Operations
Two of the bodies were found near Baluk-Baluk Island and Mataja Island, while the third was recovered in open waters later that afternoon. The recovered remains have been transported to Zamboanga City for identification and proper disposition. According to the PCG, the total number of survivors remains at 316, but authorities are still verifying the final passenger count amid conflicting reports from families and search teams.
Background of the Maritime Disaster
The vessel sank in the early morning of January 26, approximately 2.75 nautical miles northeast of Baluk-Baluk Island in Basilan province, while en route from Zamboanga City to Jolo Island in Sulu. The ferry was carrying 332 passengers and 27 crew members at the time of the incident. Survivors have recounted sudden mechanical issues that led to the sinking, triggering a large-scale search and rescue (SAR) operation involving PCG units, local government teams, and volunteer fishermen.
Investigations and Safety Concerns
The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) and the PCG are currently investigating the cause of the incident, including potential safety violations and other irregularities. Marina spokesman Luisito delos Santos stated, "Marina probers are in Zamboanga to investigate. It's hard to give conclusions at this point, but we are seeing different violations. For now, investigation showed that the passengers were supposed to board a different ship. The vessel's name indicated in the ticket was allegedly different from the ship that was deployed. The passengers were not reportedly informed about this."
Challenges in Recovery Efforts
Authorities in Basilan have noted that the area where the ferry sank presents hazards such as strong currents and occasional marine predators like sharks, complicating operations and slowing the recovery of bodies. In response to this tragedy, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is reportedly reviewing the franchise of the ferry owner and tightening inspections of other vessels operating on similar routes in collaboration with the PCG and Marina.
