DSWD-7 Extends Financial and Food Assistance to Binaliw Landslide Victims in Cebu City

In a compassionate response to a recent natural disaster, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office 7 – Central Visayas has provided crucial support to families impacted by the devastating landslide in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, prompted immediate action from the agency to alleviate the suffering of those affected.

Immediate Relief Efforts Through AICS Program

A total of 11 families, who tragically lost loved ones or had members injured in the landslide, received financial assistance amounting to P10,000 each. This payout was facilitated under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program, a key initiative by DSWD aimed at ensuring the welfare and stability of individuals and families facing emergencies.

Beyond the monetary aid, the beneficiaries were also given Family Food Packs (FFPs) to secure their nutritional needs as they continue to recover from the calamity. This dual approach of financial and food support underscores DSWD's commitment to addressing both immediate and ongoing challenges faced by disaster victims.

Gratitude from Affected Families

During an interview, one of the beneficiaries, Carmen Rambo, who lost a child in the incident, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the assistance. "It is very painful what happened, but even though it hurts, there is nothing more we can do," she said. "We are truly thankful that you did not neglect us. Thank you so much for coming here and for the help you have given us." Her words highlight the emotional and practical impact of DSWD's intervention in a time of profound loss.

DSWD's Ongoing Commitment and Future Plans

DSWD 7 Regional Director Shalaine Lucero emphasized the agency's readiness to provide additional support beyond food assistance. "We have assessed the situation in the area, and DSWD has already delivered immediate aid such as ready-to-eat food, family food packs, and food assistance through AICS. The agency is also prepared to offer other services if needed," Lucero stated.

Looking ahead, DSWD aims to expand its financial assistance to cover 131 affected families, including those who have suffered fatalities and injuries. This broader outreach reflects a proactive effort to ensure that all victims receive the necessary support to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the landslide.

The landslide in Binaliw serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by communities in disaster-prone areas, and DSWD's swift response through the AICS program demonstrates the importance of government-led crisis management in safeguarding public welfare.
