Kanlaon Volcano Erupts Again, Triggering Ashfall Across Negros Island

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported a moderately explosive eruption at Kanlaon Volcano on Sunday evening, March 15, 2026, at 6:07 p.m. This event generated a massive five-kilometer-high eruption column that drifted to the southeast and northeast, impacting numerous communities.

Widespread Ashfall and Sulfuric Smell Reported

A total of 11 local government units (LGUs) in Negros Island experienced light to moderate ashfall and a distinct sulfuric smell following the eruption. Regional, provincial, and local authorities documented these effects in at least 54 barangays, highlighting the extensive reach of the volcanic activity.

In Negros Occidental, affected areas include the cities of San Carlos, Himamaylan, and Kabankalan, as well as the municipalities of Binalbagan, La Castellana, Moises Padilla, Hinigaran, Isabela, Pontevedra, and Ilog. In Negros Oriental, residents of Canlaon City, where the volcano is located, were also impacted by the ashfall.

Alert Level 2 Maintained and Safety Measures Implemented

Phivolcs has maintained Alert Level 2 over Kanlaon Volcano, emphasizing that entry into the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) remains strictly prohibited. This eruption marks the third such event this year, following similar occurrences on February 19 and 26, 2026.

In response to the eruption, several LGUs have taken precautionary measures. Classes were suspended on Monday, March 16, 2026, in Himamaylan City and the municipalities of La Castellana and Isabela to ensure public safety.

Precautionary Warnings Issued for Nearby Areas

Bacolod City Mayor Greg Gasataya advised residents to exercise caution, noting that ashfall and other indirect effects from the eruption could potentially reach the city depending on wind conditions. He urged the public to limit outdoor activities and wear masks when going outside as a preventive measure.

The ongoing volcanic activity underscores the need for vigilance and adherence to safety protocols in the region. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, providing updates and guidance to affected communities.
