Landslide Blocks Key Road in Tabuelan, Cebu Amid Heavy Rains
Authorities in Cebu have reported a significant landslide that has disrupted transportation in the province. The incident occurred at Bongon Bridge in Barangay Bongon, Tabuelan, Cebu, specifically in Sitio Kantakutan, rendering the Lugo–Tabuelan Road impassable to vehicles as of Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
Police Response and Assessment
Police Colonel Abubakar Mangelen Jr., chief of the Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO), confirmed that the landslide was reported at 7 a.m. on Tuesday. Police officers in Tabuelan, led by their chief, immediately responded to assess the situation. They found that soil had covered the roadway, making it unsafe for passage.
Mangelen stated that they promptly coordinated with the Cebu Provincial Government to request assistance for road-clearing operations. This swift action aims to restore access and ensure public safety in the affected area.
Minimal Infrastructure Damage Reported
Despite the continuous rains in Cebu since Monday night until Tuesday, February 9–10, 2026, the Cebu provincial police have recorded no major infrastructure damage. Mangelen emphasized that only this one landslide incident was reported to his office during this period.
He added that police units across the province are on heightened alert, with search and rescue teams activated and equipment on standby in case the heavy rains continue. This proactive measure is intended to mitigate potential risks and respond quickly to any emergencies.
Ongoing Monitoring and Precautions
Mangelen continues to closely monitor municipalities, especially areas prone to flooding and landslides. "What we are doing is to make sure to control the movement of vehicles and persons in these areas so that, should there be any landslide, we could mitigate injuries or damage to property," he explained.
Regarding other key routes, such as the Transcentral Highway in Balamban and the Manipis area in Talisay City, Mangelen said there have been no reports of landslides so far. However, motorists are advised to exercise caution as the roads remain hazardous due to the ongoing rain.
Coordination with Disaster Management
To enhance preparedness, Mangelen has ordered his station commanders to immediately coordinate with their respective local disaster risk reduction and management offices should any incidents occur in their areas. This coordination is crucial for facilitating efficient rescue operations and minimizing the impact of natural disasters.
The landslide in Tabuelan serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities in Cebu's infrastructure during severe weather conditions. Authorities urge residents to stay informed and follow safety advisories to prevent accidents and ensure community resilience.
