Liloan teen saves 50 from Bagyong Tino floods

A 15-year-old student from Barangay Jubay in Liloan has become a national hero after his courageous actions during the devastating floods brought by Bagyong Tino on November 4, 2025. Jayboy Magdadaro, a Grade 9 student at Jubay Integrated School, risked his life to save approximately 50 individuals from drowning using his improvised raft and floatation device.

Eight Hours of Continuous Rescue

From 8:00 in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon, Jayboy repeatedly ventured into the powerful floodwaters and strong winds that battered Liloan. Despite the dangerous conditions, he focused solely on evacuating stranded residents, including children, pregnant women, and elderly individuals who were trapped by the rapidly rising floodwaters.

The teenager made trip after trip with his makeshift raft, transporting families to safety without showing any signs of fatigue. When asked about his remarkable endurance, Jayboy revealed that his experience with skimboarding helped him navigate the strong currents during his rescue missions.

Heartwarming Recognition and Rewards

Jayboy's selfless actions have not gone unnoticed. Multiple organizations and individuals have stepped forward to reward his bravery. Atty. Daniel Francis Arguedo, barangay captain of Mabolo, Cebu City, offered the young hero a full scholarship with a monthly allowance of P3,000 for his chosen college course.

The Municipality of Liloan also extended a full scholarship, while Sacred Heart School - Ateneo de Cebu expressed willingness to sponsor his tuition and allowance if he decides to complete his high school education at their institution. The community's support extended beyond educational opportunities as well.

Community Support and Biblical Inspiration

Through social media, Kim Burden Gothong announced that the Gothong Southern Foundation, Inc. provided Jayboy with a new smartphone to replace the one he lost during the rescue operation. Additional gifts included new clothes, bags, and shoes from Modesto Gallardo, grocery items for his entire family from Shanine Kilat, and a PBA shirt and shoes from famous basketball player June Mar Fajardo.

Jayboy's mother, Alma Magdadaro, expressed overwhelming happiness and difficulty in describing her emotions regarding the support her son has received. The teen's actions perfectly embody the biblical principle found in Luke 6:31: "Do to others as you would have them do to you," demonstrating that good deeds, even when done without expectation of reward, often bring beautiful returns.
